Evidence-based Pediatric Psychology Services in School and

Outpatient Settings

Children and adolescents with chronic illnesses and their families have unique behavioral, emotional, and academic needs. The application of evidence-based interventions in school and outpatient settings for these families is key to improving quality of life and long-term health and well-being. We will discuss strategies to support health promotion, reduce school absenteeism/school refusal, and decrease social-emotional difficulties in children and adolescents facing physical and psychological health challenges.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to describe the biopsychosocial case conceptualization approach to assessment and diagnosis of psychiatric issues
Participants will be able to describe treatment planning in youths experiencing physical health challenges
Participants will be able to identify and describe the application ofevidence-based therapy approaches for health promotion, school refusal, and treatment of psychiatric disorders (anxiety, OCD, depression, externalizing behaviors, somatic symptom disorder) that commonly affect youths experiencing physical health challenges.

Dr. Amy Hughes Lansing is a pediatric psychologist (child clinical health psychologist) and assistant professor of psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno who studies self-regulation, families, and child and adolescent health. Dr. Hughes Lansing completed her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Utah, a pre-doctoral internship at Alpert Medical School at Brown University and a post-doctoral fellowship at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. As a clinician, her work focuses on providing evidence-based services to children, adolescents and families facing chronic illness and youths with co-occurring medical and psychiatric concerns.

School psychologists will receive 3 NASP-approved credits for attendance.
